Shreveport, Louisiana Newborn Photographer

One of the most common mistakes new parents make is waiting until after the baby arrives to think about newborn photos. We do schedule months out and sometimes don’t have last minute openings. But it can never hurt to ask.

The truth is, the best time to schedule your newborn session is during pregnancy. Usually in your second or early third trimester. Most photographers only take a limited number of newborns per month because babies arrive on their own timelines, so booking ahead ensures you have a spot reserved around your due date.

The actual session itself typically happens within the first 7–20 days after birth. This window matters for a few reasons. During those early days, babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those cozy, womb-like poses people love. They’re also less sensitive to movement, which makes posing smoother and keeps the session calm and relaxed.

After about three weeks, babies start to stretch out more, become more alert, and can be a bit more unsettled during posing. That doesn’t mean you can’t do photos later, I promise. It just means the style often shifts to more awake, natural, lifestyle-type images instead of those classic curled poses.

Once your baby is here, your focus should be on bonding, healing, and adjusting, and not scrambling to find a photographer with last-minute availability. When your session is already scheduled, all you have to do is send a quick “baby is here” message, and everything else is taken care of.

If you’re considering a newborn session, a good rule of thumb is this:

  • Reach out and book while you’re still pregnant

  • Aim for a due-date-based reservation

  • Plan for the session within the first three weeks after birth

It’s a small step that makes a big difference. Because once your baby arrives, time moves fast and having that moment already set aside means you won’t miss the chance to capture it.
